tips on viewing abstract art
1. Approach a piece, stand in front of it 2-3 meters away. Look at its composition, note the colours and shapes.
2. Move a little closer, tilt your head to one side, does it look any different? Tilt your head to the other side. Now try looking at the piece upside down. Each time noticing the different things you are seeing.
3. Move closer, really close, use a flash light, inspect the surface, look at the details, look at the texture. Scan your eyes over the piece like an electronic scanner, observing all the details. Look more closely at the parts that attract your eye.
4. In a moment of quiet reflection think of one word that this piece says to you. It could trigger a memory or a emotion.
5. Move back from the piece again, think about your word, look at it the piece again. Note anything you see that is different, ponder as long as you want and absorb everything the piece is telling you.
